Ford And Dow Team Up To Create Carbon Fiber Composites

Ford Motor Co. and Dow Automotive Systems’ engineers and researchers are combining efforts to develop low-cost carbon fiber and component-level manufacturing processes. They will work to reduce the weight of new cars and trucks by up to 750 pounds by the end of the decade, a key component in Ford’s strategy to improve fuel efficiency. Ford is tackling the conversion problem through downsizing engines and electrification, while mass reduction and improved aerodynamics will reduce the workload. The partnership’s development teams will focus on establishing an economic source of automotive-grade carbon fiber, and develop component manufacturing methods for high-volume automotive applications. Until recently, carbon fiber composites have been far too costly for use in high-volume automotive applications. For complete details, visit www.dowautomotivesystems.com
